what is the bottom line on 13 sins?

13 Sins (2014)

Starring: Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrm vs. The World), Devon Graye (Legendary), Tom Bower (Die Hard 2) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy)

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

Well, before I saw this film one of my friends were telling me that it's a remake from a old Japanese film. With very similar situations from what I understand my friend was telling me and the fact that I was disappointed. Only because, I thought this was an original idea and not copied from anything. I mean, am getting annoyed that in most film genres there isn't an original idea especially with horror films these days. They copy bits here and bits here and combined them to make a new film. Like, Saw was amazing however there is a film called 'Jigsaw' literally I can't remember there is a 1962 film called Jigsaw. But, the film with the same title the victims imprint a jigsaw piece into the decease. So, saying that I feel I need an ORIGINAL horror idea. A new monster, or something! A dance teacher that kills people with her nails....no that sucks! But, you know what I mean!. Anyway, I looked at the casting for 13 sins and I am quite impress especially Ron Perlman. I think I saw this and then Pacific Rim in cinemas and just thought "he's everywhere lately!". But, I saw Mark Webber and I understood for this specific film why bring him in. But, let's see.

After I watched the film?

This is what IMDB said about the storyline "A cryptic phone call sets off a dangerous game of risks for Elliot, a down-on-his luck salesman. The game promises increasing rewards for completing 13 tasks, each more sinister than the last." That is the basic of the story, but if you're into the whole what's gonna happen next? It's not a horror horror as typical people wanna believe with the whole. OMG there's CHUCKY THE KILLER DOLL! The killer in this is your own interpretation. For example, Saw did the people in the games have a choice to kill themselves, save themselves or did Jigsaw kill them. It's really open to interpretation it's from what you believe. I liked Mark Webber's performance in this, it was very basic acting throughout the whole film but he really brought it to life. SLIGHT SPOILER: The 'caller' mentions that if you don't do a task you lose the money, but as we find out you could go to prison as well for what he could do. Am not mentioning any of the sins, however this caller once you start the game has complete control. It's very similar with the Saw films there's control and there's not. For example, Saw 2 it's in a house and it's controlled because the only people in that house is the people who are playing the game. See control. However, the in-control could be for one of the games when people just need to get out or cure or whatever. See if you haven't seen Saw 2, watch the Saw films not only because of the whole gore but the psychological reasoning behind it.

Anyway, Ron Perlman for me was a great actor in this film I did feel I wanted him to do more and not just Mark Webber. Personally, for a film I don't like the concentration on just one guy. I would of liked the girlfriend in a bit more and the family but overall I saw where it was going and understand why it had to come from his point of view.

Is it worth watching?

Am purposely not showing any pictures from the film simply because it would ruin the 13 sins. So, am showing this image below this text to show why you should watch it. To me, this film is all about control, power, money and mental stability. When watching 13 sins I had a feel of this isn't and is a horror film. You have to put yourself in his shoes really (Mark Webber's character) and it's the whole would you do it scenario. Personally, we are all human beings we don't know where we would go or what we do if we get into certain situations. I would personally recommend this film, simply because the storyline and the 'horror' generalisation is good. It's solid. The storyline is smooth it's not confusing, it's not spoon fed but more general to understand so anyone can watch this (unless you're really under age like 8!) But, I do feel it's a good thriller, the only thing that classes this as a horror is the whole psycho talk of the mental mind and the some of the gruesome sins Mark Webber has to perform. So, is it worth watching?....yes, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see this film. If it's at cinema and nothing else is on sure!, if it's on blu-ray for £13:00 and then no wait till it's under £10 at least!

So, what's the bottom line?

If you like the whole, what if and this could happen films this is for you. And, that's the bottom line right there.

Tips if watching the film?

  1. Don't do any research just go and watch the film
  2. If you have watched it and your with a friend or girlfriend/boyfriend. I did this, was FUNNY!. Set there ringtone to something else for unknown number and make it the ringtone from this film and really do 13 sins. Only do a simple one not as far as this film is making out! Like go in the fridge and have a sandwitch in 2 minutes to win 50 yen. Something like that, I did something similar was funny and really freaked them out!
  3. This can be a film to watch on your own or with friends and family it's not a jumpy film or a really gorey film as I said more psycho-mumble jumble.
  4. Make sure you have a drink or some nice flavoured popcorn :)

My rankings

Well, IMDB rated it 6.2 and personally I gave it a 10/10 the whole big numbero simply because it's a simple horror film. I LOVE the psychological what if scenarios and I like the whole plot and actors. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but at the end of the day it's something I really enjoyed watching.

Here is the IMDB website if you wanna check out who else is in it or the trailers: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2059171/?ref_=nv_sr_1
